James Canwell was born on October 6th, 1968, in Spokane, Washington, to James and Shirley Canwell. He showed interest in music at a very early age by playing melodies on the piano.
When he was about ten, his parents bought a large concert organ that had many different instrument settings. With the organ and a multiple track tape recorder, James began layering instrument sounds by recording one track, then playing it back as he added another. Soon the family dining room had become a recording studio.
At sixteen years of age, James was hired by a local television station to record announcements and tags for promotional ads, which lead to a position as an announcer on the adjacent easy listening station. Here, James was able to obtain contact information for his favorite composer, John Fox in England.
John and his wife, Joy, invited James to come to England where he could work with John and see how he took the music from a sketch on paper to a studio session to a final recording. That experience set the stage for the music James creates today.
James currently resides at Badger Lake near Spokane, Washington, where he stays busy composing and arranging orchestral music. He also does voice over work for television and radio.
